Jett Lawrence’s chances of winning the AMA Outdoor Motocross Championship have ended abruptly after a major penalty. The penalty was levied against Jett after he jumped the gate over the weekend at the Ironman Moto in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Jett immediately dropped from third to seventeenth in the standings, effectively ending his bid for the overall season points championship.

“That is a set penalty in the rule book, so it’s not a varying penalty,” said AMA director Mike Pelletier. Pelletier went on to say jumping or fouling the gate is a one-lap penalty. Jett had a one-half bike lead advantage over the rest of the field. Jett commented on the penalty saying while he acknowledged the rule, the penalty was too harsh. He posted the following to his Instagram account: Ironman keys to the race- 1. Don’t hit the gate. 2. That’s it.
The team plans to continue to work through the rest of the season to continue to win races.
