Storm Shuts Down SMX Playoffs Early

The opening round of the 2025 SuperMotocross (SMX) World Championship Playoffs delivered drama and raw tenacity—cut abruptly short by severe weather. The race was held at ZMax Dragway in Concord, North Carolina.

After a split start that sent riders in two different directions, Jett Lawerence came out ahead of the pack followed by Eli Tomac in Moto 1 of the 450 class. Jett commanded the moto the entire time leading wire to wire. Over in the 250 class, Haiden Deegan overcame a slow start to surge past Seth Hammaker in the closing laps. Hammaker had led virtually the entire race and demonstrated grit despite a severe qualifying crash. Levi Kitchen crossed the line third but was demoted due to a penalty under red-cross conditions, elevating Jo Shimoda to the podium.

A relentless storm and persistent lightning forced organizers to cancel the second motos across both the 450 and 250 classes. As a result, riders’ positions at the end of Moto 1 have been declared the official standings for the weekend, with full point payouts awarded
