iRacing: Keeping Short Course Racing Alive in the Virtual World

Two months have passed since the curtain closed on the 2026 iRacing Short Course Pro-4 Championship, but the storylines that emerged throughout the season continue to shape the conversation as the series prepares for its next chapter. From the end of a four-title dynasty to breakthrough victories, new contenders, and a championship still hanging in the balance, the 2026 Pro 4 season delivered one of the most compelling campaigns in iRacing Short Course history. Connor Barry entered the year carrying the weight of expectations. The four-time defending champion opened the season in dominant fashion, capturing victories in the opening two rounds and appearing poised to extend his title streak to five consecutive championships.

Connor Barry’s Pro4 wreck would change the trajectory of the 2026 iRacing Shortcourse Championship.

Round 3 at Wild West proved to be the turning point of the season. Misfortune struck Barry, opening the door for Thad Countryman to seize control of the championship fight. Countryman capitalized on the opportunity and never relinquished the points lead, piecing together a remarkably consistent season to earn his first career iRacing Short Course championship. Countryman not only snapped Barry’s streak of four consecutive championships but also delivered Team Gold eSports its first-ever Driver’s Championship. Perhaps even more impressive was how he accomplished it. Countryman became the first champion in iRacing Short Course history to claim a title without winning an overall race, proving that consistency can be just as valuable as outright speed in the pursuit of a championship.

Thad Countryman seized control of the Shortcourse iRacing Pro4 Championship.

“The goal wasn’t to win every race,” Countryman said. “It was to show up every round, race smart, and stay consistent. The championship isn’t won in one race.” Those words perfectly encapsulated the Team Gold eSports driver’s approach throughout the season, as consistency ultimately proved enough to dethrone a four-time champion and secure his first career title. While Countryman’s title run became the headline story, the season was equally defined by the emergence of new winners and breakthrough performances.

Evan MacFarlane secured his first career win this season.

Evan Macfarlane established himself as one of the series’ brightest young stars, steadily building momentum before ending the season with his first career overall victory in Pro 4 competition. Josh Edmundson added another feel-good moment to the season. A longtime competitor within iRacing Short Course, Edmundson had spent years chasing an elusive overall Pro 4 victory. Despite consistently showing race-winning pace and remaining a fixture near the front of the field, the top step of the podium had remained just out of reach. That finally changed at Wild West. Edmundson delivered a statement performance to secure his first career overall Pro 4 win, ending a drought that had followed him for much of his career and providing one of the most memorable moments of the season. GridOne’s Drake Mittag also continued his rise through the ranks, capturing an overall victory at Long Beach while further establishing himself as one of the premier talents in the discipline. The battle among organizations was equally competitive throughout much of the year.

Several drivers earned their first Pro4 wins in the iRacing Pro4 Championship.

Channel199 Sim Racing, GridOne, and Team Gold eSports traded blows through the early rounds as the team championship remained tightly contested. However, as the season progressed, Channel199 Sim Racing continued to widen its advantage, creating valuable breathing room heading into the second half of the year. Yet the team championship remains unfinished business.Unlike the driver’s title, the team standings will not be finalized until the 2026 World Finals Presented by Apevie Simulation in November, leaving GridOne and Team Gold eSports with one final opportunity to challenge Channel199 Sim Racing for supremacy.

The iRacing Shortcourse Pro2 Championship kicks off September 30th with five rounds of racing.

The Pro 4 season now in the books and attention shifts toward the upcoming Pro 2 Championship. Beginning September 30, the Pro 2 series will feature five rounds contested under a traditional points structure, giving drivers one final opportunity to build momentum before the biggest championship on the calendar. The 2026 World Finals Presented by Apevie Simulators begin November 18, kicking off a three-round championship series contested over three consecutive Wednesday nights. Unlike a conventional championship, the World Finals utilize a postseason-style format inspired by SMX.

Drivers earn seeds into later rounds based on performances throughout the season, while others must qualify their way into each round week after week. Competitors are eliminated as the championship progresses, with points resets tightening the battle and keeping the title fight alive. Four drivers have already secured their place in this year’s World Finals field. Connor Barry, Drake Mittag, Josh Edmundson, and Evan Macfarlane have officially locked themselves into the championship by virtue of overall round wins and are guaranteed the opportunity to compete for an iRacing Short Course World Championship this winter.
