Menzies has won the San Felipe 250, SCORE Baja 500 and 400. A Baja 1000 win has always eluded him until this year. Menzies once again teamed up with Andy McMillin to the get the job done. Also new to the team this year was Tavo Vildolsola who has miles of Baja Trophy Truck experience under his driving suit. This year\u2019s SCORE Baja 1000 was one of the longer, more grueling races than in years past. It was historic because the race started in La Paz and for the first time went north up the Baja Peninsula finishing in Ensenada, instead of its usual route south.\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_8163\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"640\"]\"\" Photo: Red Bull[\/caption]\r\n\r\n\u201cThis one feels really special. It took me over ten years to win the SCORE Baja 100 and to win the second-longest SCORE race in history, it feels pretty special. I had a very smooth first section, with no flats or anything, Andy had one flat in his part but did a great job too and Tavo went through San Felipe and all the bumps and the cold weather. I also wanted to thank SCORE for putting on another amazing race here in Baja,\u201d said Menzies.\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_8165\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"640\"]\"\" Photo: Zach Alder[\/caption]\r\n\r\nThis year\u2019s SCORE Baja 1000 course wound through over 1300 miles of Baja\u2019s most punishing terrain. There were well over 300 entries in the race. Coming in first in the moto class was the Honda 1x team of Juan Carlos Salvatierra, Shane Logan, Diego Llanos, Carter Klein and Corbin McPherson. While the attrition rate in the race was huge, there were still several class winners who persevered including Kyle Quinn in Class 1 and Riley Herbst in Trophy Spec. The spec class remains under technical review while SCORE officials continue to conduct post-race engine inspections. Menzies has been laser focused on the Baja 1000 each year and so far, a win has eluded this superteam. Menzies qualified sixth at the Baja 400. It didn\u2019t take long for Menzies to move his all-wheel drive Trophy Truck into first place and keep it there.\r\n\r\n\u201cMy plan was to try to be first on the road by the beach, but when I got there, around race mile 230, I lost my front-wheel drive. I knew it was going to be a long way from there with those guys charging hard from behind me. I just had to play it smart, keep my eyes on the ball and have no flats because that was really going to make it hard for us. We kept those guys behind us and just kind of cruised all the way from there. I had to go back to my two-wheel drive days, but it was unreal. What a day. McMillin is stepping away from racing trophy trucks full time to focus on other opportunities.\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\nMcMillin posted the following statement his Facebook page:\r\n\r\nWell\u2026 it\u2019s officially a sad day. As they say and I\u2019ve said in the past, all good things must come to an end. My race truck has been sold and is off to its new home.\r\n\r\nI have also officially closed the doors of AM31 and will no longer be racing on a full-time basis. This was not an easy decision by any means, probably the hardest of my life actually, but is one that is best for my family and I at this time.\r\n\r\nRacing is in my blood and is my passion; I still think about it non-stop and I don\u2019t think that will ever change. We are keeping our pre-run trucks, chase trucks and all of our pit equipment because I know I\u2019d still like to race in the longer races in whatever capacity or opportunity presents itself.\r\n\r\nI look forward to lots more pre-running adventures with my dad and soon my own kids. Luke finished the race physically four seconds ahead of cousin Andy. Luke received a disqualification from the race after making contact with a spectator\u2019s campsite while veering off course. Andy was penalized 35 minutes for an unsafe pass in a speed control zone. SCORE appreciates the diligent work of the CRB in assisting in adjudicating these more challenging situations that can arise during one of our SCORE Baja races,\u201d said Jose A. Grijalva, SCORE President and Race Director. \u201cSCORE will continue to review and enforce the rules that are designed to keep racers, crews and spectators all safe.\u201d\r\n\u201cUnfortunately, these two special decisions have impacted two of the most prominent and well-respected racers in the entire sport of desert racing and this is an example of the transparency SCORE has with the help of the CRB in these special situations.\u201d\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\nThe penalties opened the door for 64-year old Larry Roeseler to take the win. Roeseler had a total time on course of 10 hours and 63 minutes. Luke\u2019s cousin Andy, who originally started behind Menzies finished third.\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\nThe San Felipe 250 is first race in the SCORE International desert series. SCORE saw a full field of 269 starters for the San Felipe 250. According to SCORE, that\u2019s the highest third highest number in the 34-year history of the event.
