[{"id":6181,"permalink":"https:\/\/dirtsportsworld.com\/2023\/01\/02\/stage-1-dakar-rally-underway\/","title":"Stage 1: Dakar Rally Underway","content":"The 2023 edition of the Dakar Rally is officially underway. Events kicked off with a Prologue to determine starting positions for Stage 1. The special kicked off with the 229-mile competitor\u2019s route along the coast at what is known as \u201cSea Camp.\u201d This stage would be a loop and the competitors would return to the same spot they started.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6183\" src=\"https:\/\/dirtsportsworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Dakar2023_SunderlandStage1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/>\r\n\r\nDakar reigning champion Sam Sunderland ran into some bad luck just 30 miles into the rally crashing off his bike. Sunderland was flown to a nearby medical center where he was diagnosed with a broken shoulder blade. It is not yet known whether he will continue to compete in the reminder of the Rally. Sunderland\u2019s misfortune opened the door for Ricky Brabec who claimed the moto win and immediately claims the top spot in the points standings.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6184\" src=\"https:\/\/dirtsportsworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Dakar2023_Stage_1_Brabec-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/>\r\n\r\n\u201cGoal number one was not to open the stage. I feel quite well and confident after today, but I will just try to go day by day, keep pace and stay in the Top 10. It\u2019s going to be hard to be out of the lead - like we saw today - but we have to see how it goes until the rest day. Today was fairly simple, no stress, it was a great day,\u201d said Brabec.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6185\" src=\"https:\/\/dirtsportsworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Dakar2023_Carlos-Sainz-Audi-Rear-Lift-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/>\r\n\r\nOver in the car class, Carlos Sainz claimed an opening victory for Team Audi with the RS Q etron 2s. Behind Sainz by just seconds was rival Sebastien Loeb. Seth Quintero played things cool admittedly getting caught up in some dust in the T3 class. Quintero still managed a 3<sup>rd<\/sup> place finish right in front of Red Bull Junior teammate Austin Jones. Audi was back in the headlines in March after the RS Q e-tron won its first desert rally in Abu Dhabi. Since then, engineers have been busy developing the next generation vehicle. Significantly improved for the 2022 Morocco Rally and 2023 Dakar Rally, the Audi RS Q e-tron E2 is much lighter and more aerodynamic.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-5573\" src=\"https:\/\/dirtsportsworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Audi-RS-Q-etron-E2_Rear-1024x724.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"453\" \/>\r\n\r\nThe body has been completely redesigned, lowering the overall weight of the vehicle and improving center of gravity. Airflow was a huge part in the redesign process. The electric drivetrain has also been improved.
