The tightest race in Dakar history came down in the bike class. Kevin Benavides seized the lead over Toby Price by just 43 seconds. The win marks the narrowest margin in Dakar history.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6379\" src=\"https:\/\/dirtsportsworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Dakar2023Stage14_Kevin-Benavides-Trophy-Podium-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/>\r\n\r\n\"It\u2019s been an amazing day! I just focused on every kilometer from the first to the last. I didn\u2019t think about the position or the result I just gave my 100 percent over the whole stage and tried to enjoy the day. The special was really fast and tricky, and so muddy \u2013 thankfully I didn\u2019t make any big mistakes, but it would have been easy to have an issue out there today. I have worked so hard for this. This year\u2019s rally has been one of the closest ever and there wasn\u2019t a single day where you could afford to ease off. I couldn\u2019t have done it without the support of my team, and all my family and friends. The race is tighter than ever in the bike class as the rally continued through the famous dunes of Saudi Arabia. Today was one of the longer stages in the rally with competitors logging 419 miles.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6371\" src=\"https:\/\/dirtsportsworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Dakar2023Stage13_KevinBenavides-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/>\r\n\r\nRed Bull KTM rider Kevin Benavides claimed the Stage 13 win, Saturday. Benavides stopped to look after his teammate, Matthias Walkner who crashed hard. Officials gave Benavides the missed time back on his record. Walkner was airlifted to the hospital with pain in his lower back. Seconds separate Toby Price and Benavides in the overall rankings with just one stage to go before a winner of the rally is determined. It was also known as the \u201cEmpty Quarter Marathon.\u201d Competitors will camp on their own without assistance teams and the comforts of the bivouac. The course, 170 miles through the Empty Quarter dunes.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6352\" src=\"https:\/\/dirtsportsworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Dakar2023Stage11_SkyerHowes-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/>\r\n\r\nTaming the dunes during Stage 11 was Luciano Benavides who notched another win. Benavides says he likes these kinds of dunes. Skyler Howes who finished fourth, is back in the overall lead. Toby Price sits second.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6353\" src=\"https:\/\/dirtsportsworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Dakar2023Stage11_Loeb-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/>\r\n\r\nIn the car class, Sebastien Loeb also added another Dakar stage win to his list. Through the majestic canyons and sandy tracks, competitors were faced with the challenge of navigating criss-crossing tracks and trying not to get confused. Finally, as the rains got heavier, the Stage was shortened to 234-miles.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6213\" src=\"https:\/\/dirtsportsworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/DakarRally2023Stage3_DainielSanders-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/>\r\n\r\n2020 Champion Ricky Brabec had a bad crash and was airlifted to a local hospital. Brabec is complaining of neck pain. Meantime, Australian Red Bull GasGas factory rider Daniel Sanders claimed the Stage 3 win with Skyler Howes taking second. Events kicked off with a Prologue to determine starting positions for Stage 1. The special kicked off with the 229-mile competitor\u2019s route along the coast at what is known as \u201cSea Camp.\u201d This stage would be a loop and the competitors would return to the same spot they started.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6183\" src=\"https:\/\/dirtsportsworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Dakar2023_SunderlandStage1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/>\r\n\r\nDakar reigning champion Sam Sunderland ran into some bad luck just 30 miles into the rally crashing off his bike. Sunderland was flown to a nearby medical center where he was diagnosed with a broken shoulder blade. It is not yet known whether he will continue to compete in the reminder of the Rally. Sunderland\u2019s misfortune opened the door for Ricky Brabec who claimed the moto win and immediately claims the top spot in the points standings.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6184\" src=\"https:\/\/dirtsportsworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Dakar2023_Stage_1_Brabec-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/>\r\n\r\n\u201cGoal number one was not to open the stage. I feel quite well and confident after today, but I will just try to go day by day, keep pace and stay in the Top 10. It\u2019s going to be hard to be out of the lead - like we saw today - but we have to see how it goes until the rest day. Quintero still managed a 3<sup>rd<\/sup> place finish right in front of Red Bull Junior teammate Austin Jones. The Qatari driver, racing for the Toyota Gazoo Racing Team, had a comfortable lead in the rally all week. His closest competitor, Sebastien Loeb finished second overall. Al-Attiyah received a five-minute penalty during stage eight for a seat belt infraction. Al-Attiyah also received a suspended disqualification after stage two for not having his data logger properly connected. The Toyota team quickly rectified the problem and Al-Attiyah was required to pay a fine. The penalties did not faze him as he pressed forward extending his lead over the final days.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-4338\" src=\"https:\/\/dirtsportsworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DakarRallyStage12_SunderlandWin-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/>\r\n\r\nSam Sunderland is celebrating in the bike class as well. After lead changes, Sunderland made history for the GasGas team. This is the motorcycle company\u2019s first ever victory at the iconic event. Sunderland won the Dakar in 2017 and this marks his second victory. Sunderland took over the lead after the second stage and held it to stage six. Putting his head down, he continued to go to work with flawless riding days and consistent finishes, even with all of the pressure. 2020 champion Ricky Brabec finished second.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-4339\" src=\"https:\/\/dirtsportsworld.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/DakarRallyStage_Sunderland-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/>\r\n\r\nThis win feels better than the first as this victory was anything but easy. The times were so close this year and there was no time to let off the gas, it was a really close race, right to the end. All of the hard work, the sacrifices, and everything that the GASGAS team has done for me makes it all worthwhile. It\u2019s been five years since my first Dakar win, and it\u2019s been a long time to wait! I\u2019m super happy to get another win and claim the first one for GASGAS. Everyone on the team has worked so hard to achieve this and it\u2019s a true team effort \u2013 together we got the job done. The original record was set in 1994 by Pierre Lartigue during a 17-stage rally. It was a weekend bittersweet for the GasGas factory team. Sam Sunderland claimed a stage win while his teammate Daniel Sanders sustained a fractured elbow and wrist in a crash. Sanders has been forced to withdraw from the Rally.
