Brabec got a final of 38 points totals, bringing home the overall trophy for the Americans. This is Brabec\u2019s second win. Brabec last won the rally in 2020. A technical issue forced him out of last year\u2019s race.\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\nIt\u2019s a nice way to start the year with a victory,\u201d Brabec said at the finish. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t easy as the course was really tough and so was the competition. Ross and my own team kept me on my toes, but not just me, I think we were keeping everyone on each other\u2019s toes. It was definitely a fight to the end for everyone. I\u2019m happy for all of us, we did an excellent job all of the two weeks. I think number 9 will be my lucky number from now on.\u201d\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\nOver in the car class, Carlos Sainz had an early overall lead and stayed there all the way to the finish. Sainz who started racing at the Dakar Rally now becomes the oldest winner in the history of the event. Hearts are heavy in the bike class as Spanish rider Carles Falcon passed away after falling off his bike during stage two. Falcon was airlifted to a hospital in Riyadh and later transferred to Spain where he died.\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\nIn the car class, Nasser Al-Attiyah\u2019s engine stopped forcing him to retire from the stage 8. Al-Attiyah has struggled throughout the rally with mechanical issues. The stage winner of the day was Mattias Ekstrom for the Audi team. The day belonged to Stephane Peterhansel in his Audi. Peterhansel has 14 Dakar Rally wins on his career resume.\u00a0 \u201cToday, we set a decent time and had fun in the cockpit, with nice tracks and dunes in the morning. No flats today, no navigation blunders either, so it was a good stage,\u201d said Peterhansel. Finishing in second was Sebastien Loeb. Events kicked off with a Prologue to determine starting positions for Stage 1. The special kicked off with the 229-mile competitor\u2019s route along the coast at what is known as \u201cSea Camp.\u201d This stage would be a loop and the competitors would return to the same spot they started.\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\nDakar reigning champion Sam Sunderland ran into some bad luck just 30 miles into the rally crashing off his bike. Sunderland was flown to a nearby medical center where he was diagnosed with a broken shoulder blade. It is not yet known whether he will continue to compete in the reminder of the Rally. Sunderland\u2019s misfortune opened the door for Ricky Brabec who claimed the moto win and immediately claims the top spot in the points standings.\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\n\u201cGoal number one was not to open the stage. I feel quite well and confident after today, but I will just try to go day by day, keep pace and stay in the Top 10. It\u2019s going to be hard to be out of the lead - like we saw today - but we have to see how it goes until the rest day.
