In the end, Blake Wilkey came out unscathed on the top of the podium. About a dozen Class 11 Volkswagen-powered bugs took to the track in the final event of the night at Crandon International Raceway. This year, the bugs were required to run lights. Some even went all out with lighted whips adding to the already exciting show for the fans. All attention was on two simultaneous races Saturday afternoon. The \u201cTerraCrew\u201d 1450 trucks and Class 11 Volkswagen bugs both started at the same time in two different locations. A classic landrush start was held for the bugs as they shot off into the desert and jockeyed for position. Out front with the lead positions was Cisco Bio and Cory Vandermark.\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_6494\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"640\"]\"\" Photo: Paolo Beraldi\/ KOH[\/caption]\r\n\r\n\"\" \"\" \"\" \"\"\r\n\r\nThis year the bugs would run a 40-mile desert loop. King of the Hammers always has a high attrition rate no matter what class you are running. Out of 25 starters, only 15 finished. Vandermark was one of those finishers, but he did not see the podium. When the dust settled, Alex Gonzales brought home the victory ahead of Cisco Bio. Rounding out the podium in third was desert racing veteran Larry Roeseler.\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\nIn the Terra Crew race, Vincent Munoz stood atop the podium. Ken Knudsen and Darren Parsons finished second and third. Each Labor Day weekend the best Short Course racers in the world converge on the small town of Crandon Wisconsin for a weekend of action-packed racing. Traditions are as important to the racers here as they are to the spectators and fans who come from all over to watch the races. Every year, a parade in downtown Crandon kicks off the weekend of racing. It\u2019s the opportunity for fans to get a photo and autograph with their favorite driver. Fans get to see race vehicles up close.\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\nOpening ceremonies kicked off with 12 sportsman classes. The track action continued all the way into nightfall, ending with the Class 11 Baja Bugs. The bugs were back at Crandon for second year and they were once again a major hit. This year pro-drivers paired up with several of the bug drivers. On the very first lap after the famous land rush start one of the bugs would end up on its lid, temporarily shutting down the race. Out popped a dejected Keegan Kincaid. Kincaid was in the passenger seat for this one and never would get the chance to drive. Once the track was cleared, the Volkswagen powered-bugs got back underway. A mandatory caution was thrown for a driver change. COVID restrictions in Baja Sur forced officials to keep the event in the northern half of Baja. Traditionally the rally goes all the way to San Jose Del Cabo. The events for the NORRA rally kicked off at the famous Horsepower Ranch just outside of Ensenada. Only participants of the rally were allowed on the property after passing strict COVID protocols.\r\n\r\n\"\" \"\"\r\n\r\nThe rally started in Santo Tomas and wound its way over the peninsula towards the fishing village of San Felipe. It was a mostly easy day for the participants. On the second day, the 243-mile course ended in Bahia De Los Angeles. The course will continue south near Guerrero Negro before heading back to Bahia De Los Angeles again. The course continues to north for another San Felipe finish. On the final day racers will end at Horsepower Ranch where an awards ceremony will be held.\r\n\r\n\"\" \"\"\r\n\r\nThere are a number of vintage vehicles entered in the NORRA rally that help celebrate Baja\u2019s rich racing history.
