At issue is a proposed expansion of military training airspace \u2014 known as Special Use Airspace (SUA) \u2014 that could extend \u201csurface-to-sky\u201d restrictions over large swaths of Johnson Valley. Under such a scheme, the skies above the terrain would come under the control of the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, effectively requiring civilian operators, including drone pilots and helicopter medevac services, to obtain permission before entering.<\/p>\r\nThe Marine Corps is seeking this SUA expansion as part of broader efforts to enhance readiness and secure airspace for training. The popular race is part of the events of King of the Hammers week. \u00a0Much like the four wheeled vehicle course, King of the Motos features high speed desert terrain and rockcrawling over giant boulders. The course can be much harder to navigate on two wheels. Organizer Justin Leineweber threw in an extra element. The entire course was unmarked. Riders had to navigate the course via GPS units.\r\n\r\n\"\" \"\"\r\n\r\nGerman KTM rider Manuel Littenbichler had the lead on the third lap, battling Cody Webb. Unfortunately, Littenbhichler somehow bypassed the obstacle in Backdoor. He was assessed a 1-hour penalty. 2017 winner Colton Haaker received a similar penalty. The mistakes allowed Cody Webb to take the victory and the crown. Webb missed a checkpoint in 2017 and lost to Haaker. Webb has multiple wins at the King of the Motos. Webb sustained an ACL injury ten months prior to the event sidelining him from racing.\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\n\u201cThe first lap everyone was taking turns leading, making mistakes. I kind of didn\u2019t make the best decision on tires but it lasted. I ran a standard tire, just because I knew it\u2019d last, and it really kicked my butt,\u201d Webb said. \u201cSo, the first two laps I struggled, and I did all I could to hang with Manny, just to stay in his rear wheel. That last half I had a way better tire setup. And then I shot up Backdoor, and I saw him miss it, and then it was like \u201cOk, I know he missed that checkpoint.\u201d So, once I saw Manny miss that checkpoint on the final lap, I was like \u2018OK, take your time, don\u2019t mess anything up because that\u2019s going to be a big setback for him.\u201d I lost that way a couple of years ago and it sucks. For years, there have been just a very small handful of racers that continuously won the event over and over. Blyler had the lead at the very end of the race with Hammertown in his sights when he rolled the car on Backdoor. Every second would count. Recovery crews positioned in the canyon had to hook up to the vehicle and get it back on all four wheels. Blyler left his co-driver behind and raced to the finish line with a 20-minute lead on corrected time.\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\n\u201cWe really messed that up. That was really stupid,\u201d said Blyler when asked about the rollover. \u201cWe came to this race four years ago and my goal was to finish,\u201d said Blyler. Finish he did in a Miller Motorsports chassis. Right behind Blyler was Erik Miller who was eventually scored in second place on corrected time.\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\nJust under one hundred starters took the green flag at the 2020 King of the Hammers race. The day began with a military flyover from the 29 Palms Marine Base. Loren Healy was out front early on in the race. Healy opted to run this year\u2019s King of the Hammers in a single seat race vehicle. That may have been a wrong gamble as he soon began to drop back in the field. Through the dust, Bailey Campbell was leading on her last lap with shot at the title. She would go down with mechanical issues. Cameron Steele was next up in lead as he passed Campbell. It wouldn\u2019t be long before the gremlins struck Steele too. Mechanical issues would end his run. Steele competed Thursday in the T1 Unlimited Desert truck race. Mechanical issues sidelined him there too.\r\n\r\n\"\" \"\"\r\n\r\nA potential bottleneck in Chocolate Thunder had officials scrambling to discuss a course re-route. As the leaders neared the famous obstacle, Promoter Dave Cole gave the competitors a thumbs up to go through. Crisis averted. Racers will finish throughout the night, accomplishing the impossible. Brad Lovell edged out Seth Van Dyke for the win. The win was a little redemption for Lovell who was in the same situation in 2010, getting beat by Loren Healy by a mere 28 seconds. Every second counts in racing which includes driving smart and not wasting time in the rocks.\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\n\u201cI was worried there weren\u2019t going to be enough rocks for us this year! Because this is fast in the rocks, but it\u2019s not all that fast in the desert. We bunched up with all 4 of these cars out here on Spooners, and we got out in the desert and I figured I gotta run this thing for all it\u2019s worth, and just killed it, but we made it in,\u201d said Lovell at the finish line.\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\nThe Lovell brothers have been racing the same Ford Ranger for the last decade and it shows they have not lost their touch. The brothers can run the Hammer trails in their sleep.\r\n\r\nThe Legends class was created for the exact vehicle the Lovells race. Every year, the cost of a winning KOH car goes up as new technology, suspension design and motor packages are added. The Every Man Challenge celebrates those who just can\u2019t keep up with the new evolution. The racers and vehicles in the EMC may not be as competitive as those in the big 4400 KOH event, but they still have a passion for racing the Hammers.\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\nDan Fresh was the winner in the Modified Class. Requirements include starting with a production-based vehicle, partial frame, mechanical steering and 37-inch DOT approved tires. The 4600 class is the most restrictive of Everyman Challenge. Honors there went to Jesse Haines.
