Blake Wilkey Wins Friday Night Slug Bug Fest at Crandon

The bugs were back in Crandon and it was a Friday night slug bug fest on the track. In the end, Blake Wilkey came out unscathed on the top of the podium. About a dozen Class 11 Volkswagen-powered bugs took to the track in the final event of the night at Crandon International Raceway. This year, the bugs were required to run lights. Some even went all out with lighted whips adding to the already exciting show for the fans. Wilkey, driving his signature purple bug with the shark fin on top managed to hold off the field multiple cautions around the track.

Festivities kicked off with the classic downtown Crandon parade. Race fans packed the streets to meet their favorite drivers. Following the parade, well over a hundred race vehicles made their way back to Crandon International Raceway for the opening ceremonies of the sportsman race.

One of the feature events Friday night included the Pro-Buggy vs. Pro Lite showdown.

In the final turn on the last lap, Dave Mason driving the number 65 Pro-Buggy made a pass for the win, sliding sideways at the flag stand.  The Labor Weekend of racing at the Crandon World Championships will continue Saturday with the season ending points races for the Championship Off Road Racing series.
