It was all about Eli Tomac at the latest round of Supercross racing held in Tampa, Florida. Tomac earned his 30th career win over the weekend inside of Raymond James Stadium. The win moves Tomac into the points lead for the season.
The track was challenging for the riders. Adam Cianciarulo had the lead early in the main race. Tomac spent several laps chasing Cianciarulo down. Tomac attempted a pass in the sandy split lanes, but it wasn’t enough. On Lap 11, Tomac made the same move, going wide in the outside berm and finally gaining the lead. He never looked back, extending the lead by several seconds. Eventually Cianciarulo would go down, crashing in the whoops, which opened the door for Malcolm Stewart and Cooper Webb to run in the podium spots. Webb got in front of Stewart for 2nd. At some point, Ken Roczen who was originally deep in the mid-pack trying to recover from an early crash made it by Malcolm Stewart for third. The podium spot was not enough for Roczen to hold onto the points lead and the coveted red plate.
Florida also marked the starting round for the Eastern Regional 250SX class. Shane McElrath had the lead early on in the race and continued all the way to the end earning a first-place finish.
Supercross partnered with St Jude for the “This Race Saves Lives” campaign. Riders ran custom inspired artwork on their bikes and gear in support of the campaign. That gear was later collected after the race for an online auction that will run through the end of the season. A one of a kind Ricky Carmichael custom built Suzuki Boulevard M109R B.O.S.S. was the first item listed on the auction. Fans can bid on the items at stjude.org/supercrossauction
